This innovative initiative involves the integration of tissue engineering and cell therapy technologies, with the overarching objective of restoring insulin production for the growing population of diabetes patients worldwide. The Micro-Pancreas, at its core, is a biological tissue-derived scaffold that is meticulously populated with insulin-secreting β cells derived from human stem cells. Upon implantation in diabetic patients, this construct is designed to reinstate the regulated insulin secretion that has been compromised due to the destruction of the patient's endogenous pancreatic islets. The biological tissue-derived scaffold is designed to significantly reduce the number of required stem cells (or islets) for normalizing blood glucose levels using islet transplantation (Edmonton protocol) or stem cell-derived β cells transplantation.\nThe advent of Betalin’s groundbreaking technology is timely, with its readiness for scale-up supported by our preclinical studies. The project is poised to advance to the regulatory approval phase for clinical studies. Additionally, apart from its capacity to transform the diabetes treatment landscape, Betalin's technology holds the promise of serving as a versatile platform that could support cells from different organs.
