The implication of the Agreement is that global temperatures should permanently stay at or below this threshold. To stabilise global temperatures at a given level in the long-term, warming at the global scale must be halted. This can only be achieved by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases to net-zero. If all existing climate policies are successfully implemented, the world is currently on track for between 2.5 and 3 degrees of global warming. Given the explicit aims of the Paris Agreement to limit warming to less than 2 degrees, it is important to study what stabilising temperatures at specific global warming levels would mean for regional climate in different regions across the globe.\n\nResearch into stabilised climates is still in its early stages. Evidence is beginning to emerge that a stabilised climate could be very different from a rapidly warming climate, even at the same global warming level. However, the physical mechanisms explaining these differences in the mean state remain poorly understood. Beyond the mean state, even less is known about how internal modes of climate variability might differ in a warmer, stabilised climate. Changes in the pattern, frequency, or amplitude of modes of variability would have severe impacts across much of the world. Changes in the mean state and in internal climate variability must be quantified and understood, and incorporated into future climate change risk assessments. In addition to needing to include stabilised climate projections, climate change risk assessments also need to account for natural influences on climate. An often overlooked risk with significant consequences is the possibility of a series of large volcanic eruptions occurring in a future warmer climate. Several successive large volcanic eruptions occurred in the 19th century, and a similar sequence of eruptions could occur again. A storyline where a series of large volcanic eruptions occur in a stabilised climate will be explored in this fellowship.\n\nThis fellowship will fill an important gap in our assessments of possible future climate change and regional climate risk. Climate model simulations are an important tool to explore possible future climates and investigate the mechanisms of future climate change. Currently, only very few experiments designed to study stabilisation at specific global warming levels exist. Novel ensembles designed to study climate stabilisation and the response to volcanic eruptions in a warmer, stabilised climate will be produced in this fellowship. This highly novel approach will generate important insights into the risks of a future world where temperatures have stabilised and produce a valuable resource to be shared with the broad science community at the end of this fellowship. The outcomes of this fellowship will inform policy and adaptation discussions over the next decade and beyond.","granted":{"currency":"GBP","totalCost":0.0,"fundedAmount":621530.0},"h2020Programmes":null,"funding":{"funder":{"id":"ukri________::UKRI","shortname":"UKRI","name":"UK Research and Innovation","jurisdiction":{"code":"GB","label":"United Kingdom"},"pid":null},"level0":{"id":"ukri________::UKRI::NERC","description":"NERC","name":"NERC"},"level1":null,"level2":null},"links":[{"header":{"relationType":"projectOrganization","relationClass":"hasParticipant","relatedIdentifier":"pending_org_::0e7d62a1083da11ac863a8a7148fac0b","relatedRecordType":"organization","relationProvenance":"sysimport:crosswalk:entityregistry","trust":"0.900"},"title":null,"websiteurl":null,"pid":null,"collectedfrom":[{"dsId":"openaire____::0362fcdb3076765d9c0041ad331553e8","dsName":"OpenOrgs Database"}],"author":null,"description":null,"dateofacceptance":null,"publisher":null,"codeRepositoryUrl":null,"resulttype":null,"instances":null,"officialname":null,"datasourcetype":null,"datasourcetypeui":null,"openairecompatibility":null,"legalname":"UNIVERSITY OF READING","legalshortname":"UNIVERSITY OF READING","country":{"code":"UNKNOWN","label":"Unknown"},"projectTitle":null,"code":null,"acronym":null,"contracttype":null,"funding":null,"validationDate":null,"startDate":null,"endDate":null,"givenName":null,"familyName":null,"personRoleInProject":null,"declaredAffiliation":null,"affiliationsTimeline":null},{"header":{"relationType":"projectOrganization","relationClass":"hasParticipant","relatedIdentifier":"ukri________::d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e","relatedRecordType":"organization","relationProvenance":"sysimport:crosswalk:entityregistry","trust":"0.900"},"title":null,"websiteurl":null,"pid":null,"collectedfrom":[{"dsId":"openaire____::92ed35af5f7f859de570d1d2919c09a4","dsName":"UK Research and Innovation"}],"author":null,"description":null,"dateofacceptance":null,"publisher":null,"codeRepositoryUrl":null,"resulttype":null,"instances":null,"officialname":null,"datasourcetype":null,"datasourcetypeui":null,"openairecompatibility":null,"legalname":null,"legalshortname":null,"country":{"code":"UNKNOWN","label":"Unknown"},"projectTitle":null,"code":null,"acronym":null,"contracttype":null,"funding":null,"validationDate":null,"startDate":null,"endDate":null,"givenName":null,"familyName":null,"personRoleInProject":null,"declaredAffiliation":null,"affiliationsTimeline":null}]},{"id":"ukri________::013497a7ae429d55d0ed8578a7834343","code":"NE/K014757/1","acronym":null,"title":"Cretaceous-Paleocene-Eocene: Exploring Climate and Climate Sensitivity","websiteUrl":null,"startDate":"2014-01-01","endDate":"2016-12-31","callIdentifier":null,"keywords":"Climate & Climate Change","openAccessMandateForPublications":false,"openAccessMandateForDataset":false,"subjects":null,"fundings":[{"shortName":"UKRI","name":"UK Research and Innovation","jurisdiction":"GB","fundingStream":{"id":"UKRI::NERC","description":"NERC"}}],"summary":"How sensitive is the planet to increasing concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide? This crucial question has been the subject of intensive research over the past two decades. Recently, increasing use is being made of past climates, both to evaluate models used for future prediction, and to provide observational constraints on climate sensitivity. However, the relevance of past climates for future sensitivity is yet to be tested. In particular, differing palaeogeography (i.e. continental positions, mountain extents and height, and ocean floor depth) will influence climate and climate sensitivity, but to an extent that is unknown. In this study, we will use a modelling framework to explore the role of palaeogeography in controlling climate and climate sensitivity during the most recent interval of 'greenhouse' climates from the Cretaceous to Eocene (145 to ~35 million years ago; 145-35 Ma). We will investigate uncertainties related to the reconstructed palaeogeographies and the models used. We will evaluate our findings by comparing the model results with observations - compilations of existing data which we will synthesise and re-interpret. The work will provide fascinating insights into how our planet operates on long (multi-million year) timescales, and assess the utility of observations of past warm climates for informing future climate sensitivity. \n\nThree recent developments which make this study timely are: (1) Brand new palaeogeographic maps of the Cretaceous to Eocene which improve greatly on previous representations in terms of both accuracy and temporal resolution, (2) A step change in the computing power available means that for the first time we can spin up large ensembles of simulations climates to equilibrium, allowing us to explore uncertainties, and (3) New understanding of the controls and limitations on palaeoclimate proxies means that we can provide a state-of-the-art comparison of our model simulations with the geological record.","granted":{"currency":"GBP","totalCost":0.0,"fundedAmount":287282.0},"h2020Programmes":null,"funding":{"funder":{"id":"ukri________::UKRI","shortname":"UKRI","name":"UK Research and Linge is a Lecturer in German at the University of Exeter who is working on a project called 'Sex and Nature: Sexology, Animals and the Arts after 1900'. The project explores how concepts of nature and the environment were essential to the development of modern concepts of sex, gender and sexuality. For example, geneticists first applied the word 'intersex' to butterflies in 1917, long before it was used to describe human anatomy or identity. Funke is an Associate Professor of English and Sexuality Studies at the University of Exeter with research specialisms in queer, trans and feminist modernist studies and the history of sexual science. As PI on the NLHF-funded Out and About: Queering the Museum project, she has worked with young LGBTQ+ people to explore LGBTQ+ heritage through the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) collections. This has revealed that young LGBTQ+ people are strongly engaged with natural history and climate research.\nThe 'Queering climate activism' project builds on Linge and Funke's research expertise to engage young LGBTQ+ people with historical materials that show the intricate links between gender, sexuality, nature and climate: early twentieth-century LGBTQ+ activist Magnus Hirschfeld, for instance, was keenly interested in the human connection with nature and the environment, including the weather. Lesbian sexologist Edith Ellis wrote about Cornish seaweeds and seascapes, reflecting her bond with a changing natural world. Gay rights campaigner Edward Carpenter promoted vegetarianism and farming as part of a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. Discussing these and other examples will empower young LGBTQ+ people to explore their central role in climate research and activism today.\nTo achieve the project aims, we will involve the young people in a series of bespoke interactive in-person (or online) engagement events in Cornwall and Devon in September and October 2021. Each three-hour event will explore historical print, film and literary material as well as local objects from the Tate St Ives and Exeter's Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) collections, which highlight the connection between gender, sexuality and the environment.\nAs part of the Wellcome Trust-funded Transformations project (2019-2020), a public engagement project with young trans and non-binary people to explore the history of sexual science, both PI and Co-I have gained significant experience in using historical material to engage young LGBTQ+ people. This is an innovative and flexible approach to engagement: we provide material for discussion and draw on our research to answer questions, but the direction of the discussions as well as specific topics and interests are decided on by the young collaborators. The young people's insights will then be drawn upon to develop a creative output to share their knowledge and insights more widely. As part of this process, the young people will take part in an additional three-hour comedy-writing workshop with LGBTQ+ comedian Sian Docksey. The final public engagement event of the project will be an online comedy salon, during which a local artist will present a performance based on the young people's writing during the comedy workshop. For this, we will approach Kim Wei, a non-binary queer performer who is currently the Bard of Exeter. In this way, we will enable young people to share the knowledge and expertise that they have gained through the project and to gain the confidence to use their expertise as part of LGBTQ+ and climate activism. We will record and publish the Salon on our "Sex & Nature Salon" website to share it with wider audiences online, who will be encouraged to expand their thinking around climate activism to incorporate LGBTQ+ perspectives.\nFor information about project partners see the "Personal Eligibility" section. Innovation","jurisdiction":"GB","fundingStream":{"id":"UKRI::AHRC","description":"AHRC"}}],"summary":"Over the past thirty years scientists and writers have presented ever more detailed, accurate and impactful narratives of our changing climate. This work has helped to ensure that causes and effects of climate change are now widely communicated and are largely understood by governments, organizations and individuals around the world. However, as the stalled negotiations of recent COP climate summits have proven, simply understanding (even deeply feeling) the causes and effects of climate change is not enough to ensure the international agreements and transformative social action that is desperately needed. \n\nThis is a problem of narrative and, as philosophers such as Timothy Clark have discussed, a problem of scale (2016). What is needed are new narrative forms that can work across the vastly different spatial and temporal scales of climate change and human experience. As Dipesh Chakrabarty puts it: 'We need to connect deep and recorded histories' and put the 'planetary' timescales of climate science 'in conversation' with the timescales of human history and experience (2021). This project will instigate just such a conversation through a new form of 'historical climate fiction' developed in partnership with the Met Office. \n\nThis partnership will allow for a creative engagement with both cutting-edge climate science and little-known documents from the Met Office archives that chart the history and development of this science. The history of meteorology and climatology is the history of infrastructure, technology, capitalism, conflict and empire. It is also a history of people. The Met Office archives tell the stories of missionaries meticulously recording rainfall, of telegraph operators conveying the first storm forecasts and of merchant sailors mapping ocean currents by depositing 'Bottle Papers' along trade routes around the world. To date, such sources have been used primarily as data sets for climate models. This project seeks to recover the localised human histories of these sources and bring them into creative dialogue with the planetary perspectives of modern climate science, providing the foundation for a fictional method that will operate across vastly different spatial and temporal scales. \n\nThis historical dialogue is long overdue. As climate justice campaigners and authors from the global south have asserted, a major barrier to unilateral action is the fact that the scientific narrative presented in the IPCC Report makes almost no mention of history (Ghosh, 2021). Or rather, the historical perspective it offers is one in which 'humanity' is figured as a uniform totality rather than, in Donna Haraway's words, 'situated human beings in complicated histories' (2016). This project will take as its starting point the 'situated' and 'complicated' human histories that emerge from the Met Office archives. It will ask what these histories can tell us about the discourses, structures and foundational narratives that underpin modern science, and how they must be adapted to engage with our changing world.\n\nCentral to this fellowship will be a sustained process of interdisciplinary collaboration, through a programme of creative workshops at the Met Office. These workshops will engage scientists with the ongoing research and practice of this fellowship and will be used to develop and test ideas which will inform both the creative outputs and the Met Office's new 'climate literacy' strategy. In this way, the fellowship will not only generate new fictional narratives to engage the wider public, it will also show the potential for creative practice-as-research to help shape policy and practice at a major scientific institution, providing an exciting and innovative model for future interdisciplinary work that puts Arts and Humanities research at the centre of the strategic response to climate change.","granted":{"currency":"GBP","totalCost":0.0,"fundedAmount":202140.0},"h2020Programmes":null,"funding":{"funder":{"id":"ukri________::UKRI","shortname":"UKRI","name":"UK Research and Innovation","jurisdiction":{"code":"GB","label":"United Kingdom"},"pid":null},"level0":{"id":"ukri________::UKRI::AHRC","description":"AHRC","name":"AHRC"},"level1":null,"level2":null},"links":[{"header":{"relationType":"projectOrganization","relationClass":"hasParticipant","relatedIdentifier":"pending_org_::1482912884e1cf5c333b2f37fa1bfed7","relatedRecordType":"organization","relationProvenance":"sysimport:crosswalk:entityregistry","trust":"0.900"},"title":null,"websiteurl":null,"pid":null,"collectedfrom":[{"dsId":"openaire____::0362fcdb3076765d9c0041ad331553e8","dsName":"OpenOrgs Database"}],"author":null,"description":null,"dateofacceptance":null,"publisher":null,"codeRepositoryUrl":null,"resulttype":null,"instances":null,"officialname":null,"datasourcetype":null,"datasourcetypeui":null,"openairecompatibility":null,"legalname":"UNIVERSITY OF EXETER","legalshortname":"UNIVERSITY OF EXETER","country":{"code":"UNKNOWN","label":"Unknown"},"projectTitle":null,"code":null,"acronym":null,"contracttype":null,"funding":null,"validationDate":null,"startDate":null,"endDate":null,"givenName":null,"familyName":null,"personRoleInProject":null,"declaredAffiliation":null,"affiliationsTimeline":null},{"header":{"relationType":"projectOrganization","relationClass":"hasParticipant","relatedIdentifier":"pending_org_::9e3141a745197d1f07756bc63b1b837f","relatedRecordType":"organization","relationProvenance":"sysimport:crosswalk:entityregistry","trust":"0.900"},"title":null,"websiteurl":null,"pid":null,"collectedfrom":[{"dsId":"openaire____::0362fcdb3076765d9c0041ad331553e8","dsName":"OpenOrgs Database"}],"author":null,"description":null,"dateofacceptance":null,"publisher":null,"codeRepositoryUrl":null,"resulttype":null,"instances":null,"officialname":null,"datasourcetype":null,"datasourcetypeui":null,"openairecompatibility":null,"legalname":"Met Office","legalshortname":"Met Office","country":{"code":"UNKNOWN","label":"Unknown"},"projectTitle":null,"code":null,"acronym":null,"contracttype":null,"funding":null,"validationDate":null,"startDate":null,"endDate":null,"givenName":null,"familyName":null,"personRoleInProject":null,"declaredAffiliation":null,"affiliationsTimeline":null},{"header":{"relationType":"projectOrganization","relationClass":"hasParticipant","relatedIdentifier":"pending_org_::69448520924ed6280c1584e46dd96764","relatedRecordType":"organization","relationProvenance":"sysimport:crosswalk:entityregistry","trust":"0.900"},"title":null,"websiteurl":null,"pid":null,"collectedfrom":[{"dsId":"openaire____::0362fcdb3076765d9c0041ad331553e8","dsName":"OpenOrgs Database"}],"author":null,"description":null,"dateofacceptance":null,"publisher":null,"codeRepositoryUrl":null,"resulttype":null,"instances":null,"officialname":null,"datasourcetype":null,"datasourcetypeui":null,"openairecompatibility":null,"legalname":"University of Exeter","legalshortname":"University of Exeter","country":{"code":"UNKNOWN","label":"Unknown"},"projectTitle":null,"code":null,"acronym":null,"contracttype":null,"funding":null,"validationDate":null,"startDate":null,"endDate":null,"givenName":null,"familyName":null,"personRoleInProject":null,"declaredAffiliation":null,"affiliationsTimeline":null},{"header":{"relationType":"projectOrganization","relationClass":"hasParticipant","relatedIdentifier":"pending_org_::da0771722f2c6f78b4947ca599d1cab9","relatedRecordType":"organization","relationProvenance":"sysimport:crosswalk:entityregistry","trust":"0.900"},"title":null,"websiteurl":null,"pid":null,"collectedfrom":[{"dsId":"openaire____::0362fcdb3076765d9c0041ad331553e8","dsName":"OpenOrgs Database"}],"author":null,"description":null,"dateofacceptance":null,"publisher":null,"codeRepositoryUrl":null,"resulttype":null,"instances":null,"officialname":null,"datasourcetype":null,"datasourcetypeui":null,"openairecompatibility":null,"legalname":"MET OFFICE","legalshortname":"MET OFFICE","country":{"code":"UNKNOWN","label":"Unknown"},"projectTitle":null,"code":null,"acronym":null,"contracttype":null,"funding":null,"validationDate":null,"startDate":null,"endDate":null,"givenName":null,"familyName":null,"personRoleInProject":null,"declaredAffiliation":null,"affiliationsTimeline":null}]}]}
